We know what it means to praise–to lift up or exalt someone or something. In this case, the call is to exalt God’s name. The description of “terrible” here has a different meaning than we might think today. It comes from a word that means to fear, revere, or honor. So we could say “great and awesome name.” And name carries a greater meaning than we usually give it today. A person’s name wasn’t just used as identification but represented everything that made the person unique, significant, or special–basically a mark of the person’s individuality and reputation. So the call here to praise His name is a call on the people to revere, celebrate, and glorify His whole being. Why do we praise His name? Because He is holy. To be holy is to be set apart or sanctified. The LORD is set apart, separate, unique from any other in being and in character. He is distinct from any so-called gods Israel’s neighbors (or people groups today) worshiped. He is wholly just and righteous; He sets the standard for right and He is always consistent. There is none like Him. So…the LORD reigns; the LORD is great; the LORD is holy; the LORD is to be praised.
