When you give a child instructions, it’s usually wise to ask, “Do you understand?” before setting them loose on whatever you’ve assigned. If they don’t understand the process, know how to use the tools, or are otherwise confused, the end result will likely not be what you envisioned. God provides us the instruction we need to live as His followers. Sometimes we might not understand exactly what He expects. That’s when we need do as James, the half-brother of Jesus, advised, “Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him (James 1:5).” When we pray and ask God to give us discernment so we can do His will, He won’t withhold knowledge from us. He won’t criticize or scold us for asking; instead, He’ll respond with love and generosity. If we’re His servant, pleasing Him will be top priority; knowing what He wants will guide us. So ask for understanding. He’ll give it.
