Have you ever been nothing but kind to someone and they turned on you? It hurts, doesn’t it? David had sorrowed over his enemies’ hardship, but when he faced a painful situation, his enemies celebrated it. In fact, they gathered more people to join in the mocking and rejoicing at David’s sad situation. Now even strangers have become involved in mistreating this psalmist. How sad…and how human. It’s easy to jump on a bandwagon. We might not know all the details, but if others are “up in the air,” as my mom would have put it, we decide there must be reason to join in. It’s an emotional response. But is it the right one? In Luke 6:27-28, Jesus said, “But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you. Bless them that curse you, and pray for them that despitefully use you.” Bandwagons can be tempting. They might even seem like fun or a good idea. But if we claim Christianity, we need to be cautious about climbing aboard. We’re called to better behavior, and we’re held to a higher standard. In all honesty, I’ve never regretted being kind. I can’t say the same about the opposite emotional response.

Song of praise

Hymn day: “We Shall Not Be Moved”
HYMN DAY! The exact origins of “We Shall Not Be Moved” aren’t known. One of the earlier printings available is in Spirituals Triumphant Old and New (1927), compiled by African American composer, choral conductor, and singer Edward Boatner (1898–1981). Boatner heard many spirituals from his father, an itinerant Methodist minister,…
