Jesus performed many miraculous signs and wonders, but He didn’t do it to entertain, like a magician. His intention was to point to the power He’d been given by God the Father. In other words, He meant to confirm His identity as the Christ. Apparently there were many who saw the connection, because they marveled at His abilities and wondered if He could be the long-awaited Messiah. Often those seeking healing called Jesus the “Son of David,” referring to the royal lineage from which the Messiah was promised to come. My heart swells when I think about those observers who “got it”—who saw Jesus rightly for who He was, the Son of God come in flesh with the power to save. That same Jesus overcame death and still possesses the power to save. But we must acknowledge Him for who He is in order to be set free from our chains of sin and shame. He’s done His part; it’s up to us to believe.

Boatner heard many spirituals from his father, an itinerant Methodist minister,…
