I’ve spent a lot of time pondering and praying about the call to “love like Jesus.” There’s no denying Jesus loved big. He was so compassionate. He didn’t shy away from spending time with and meeting the needs of the lowliest of the low in the cities and towns He entered. We are called to emulate Him in reaching out with compassion and kind deeds, but we can’t stop there. You see, Jesus looked with compassion on people because He saw their lostness. He likened them as sheep without a shepherd. He loved them enough to tell them they were lost. He loved them enough to confront their sinfulness and call them to repentance. If we are truly going to love like Jesus, then we must offer what they need more than anything else: truth of their need for a Savior. Anything less is cruel. We know what the Bible says—no man comes to the Father except through the Son; knowing “of” God is not the same as knowing God personally; repentance means change, no longer walking in the dark but in the Light of His grace. If we are saved, then we know that following Him and His instruction leads us to life eternal. We must love like Jesus and point people to the Light.
