If we had to follow a list of rules to be acceptable before God, none of us would be found pleasing. We simply cannot do enough, be enough, or perform well enough to save our souls. So God pushed aside the dos and don’ts and made a way for us to be acceptable in His sight: He sent Jesus, His Son, to pay the penalty of our sin. Because of Jesus, we can be washed clean of all unrighteousness. We can stand before God as if no sin had ever enticed us. Now, we can’t avoid sin on our own power. God knew this, too. So He gave us the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, our own personal Guide and Advisor. When we are weak, He is strong. When we are tempted, He helps us overcome. Under the law, we would all be failures; under the Spirit’s guidance, we are victors. God’s love has made us competent. Is it not a joy to be His?
