Choosing love

Eight years ago the greatest evangelical preacher of our generation, Rev. Billy Graham, went Home. I have a pretty active imagination, but I cannot fathom the rewards he must have received when he arrived at Heaven’s gate. He touched so many lives! And because of his commitment to Christ, he also suffered unkindnesses. Not every person responded positively to his loving invitation to know his Savior. But not once could the newspapers report that he reacted with anger or malice. Reporters tried to find “dirt” so they could discredit him; it didn’t work. Rev. Graham lived a life of love—love for God, love for family, love for his fellow man. What a legacy. What a wonderful example for us to follow. And knowing that he—a human, just like you and me!—was successful in loving even those who were unloving to him gives me hope that I, with the Father’s help, can do it, too. If each of us who proclaim to be a Christian chose love over defensiveness, anger, or retaliation, think how different this world could be.
