In 1984, an artist named Bonnie Tyler released a song called, “Holding Out For a Hero.” I think a lot of people are looking for a hero—someone to rescue them and set their world to right. The thing is, a Hero is available to them if they’d only look to Jesus. It’s so important for those of us who claim Jesus as Lord to live like He matters to us. People need to see the difference He makes in human lives. Being a Christian isn’t an insurance policy against hardship. Often, it’s the opposite. Today’s culture isn’t necessarily kind to and accepting of Christians. The world in general presents conflicts in the shape of natural disasters, sicknesses, family and business crises, and on and on I could go. We’re stuck in this world for now, so we’re going to face those calamities the same as everyone else. But we don’t face them on our own strength or wisdom. We have Him walking the pathways with us, and that makes all the difference. People need to see us living out our faith—meaning, following the statutes in His Word and therefore standing blameless before Him. People might try to shame us for our stance, but when we live as He’s called us to live, we will not be put to shame by Him. Jesus, my Hero, laid down His life so that I could have eternal life. I’d rather strive to please Him than try to please an ever changing, never satisfied world.
