Isn’t it the pits to be born with a sin nature? As the Apostle Paul put it in Romans 7, “For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.” If we’re truly born again, we don’t actively seek doing wrong, but sometimes it still happens. And when it does, we have to accept responsibility for the choice. Yes, the devil can tempt and taunt, but he cannot make us sin. The saddest part is, once we begin to give in to the devil’s tempting, we find ourselves drifting further and further away from God, who has such better plans for us. When we fully give ourselves over to sin, we kill ourselves spiritually. Such a heartbreaking situation, not only for the one who’s fallen but for those who love him and for the One who gave His life to save us from sin. Here’s the happy part of the equation: We can never drift so far that God’s love and forgiveness cannot reach us. When we turn our hearts to Him in humble submission and repentance, we are welcomed back into the fold as if the sin never occurred. Yes, there will still be consequences; that’s a natural result of poor choices. But we will be restored into fellowship, where we can find our peace and joy again. Such a better decision to choose life over spiritual death!
