There’s a saying sometimes whispered in Christian circles: “He’s so heavenly minded he’s no earthly good.” Ouch. There’s nothing wrong with being heavenly minded. We are to think of the things above and not get too wrapped up in this world because it’s our temporary dwelling. There’s definitely a balancing act. The danger of getting so caught up in our convictions is we can develop a “holier-than-thou” attitude and start beating others over the head with how “good” we are. Sharing the truth in love is one thing; railing at someone about sin is another. It’s the Holy Spirit’s job to convict the sinner; it’s our responsibility to live uprightly and show the example. Let me clarify, having convictions is a good thing. They help us chart a God-honoring course. But it’s okay to walk that course without yelling at bystanders why we’re going that direction. God knows. And He’ll use our good choices to impact those we encounter.
