Ever have one of those nights when you just can’t sleep? Maybe worries or questions about the unknown keep you awake. Whatever it is, sleep eludes you, and you lay there in the dark, staring at the shadowy ceiling, feeling all alone. Well, guess what? You are never alone. During those long, seemingly lonely nights, God the Father is awake and His ears are open to your call. My mom told me many times, “If you can’t sleep, don’t bother counting sheep; just talk to the Shepherd.” No, the advice isn’t unique (you’ll find it on memes), but when she said it, she meant it. She knew the value of spending time in prayer at any hour of the day or night. She knew He was listening, that He cared, that He would meet her need…whatever it was. He is our help. We are safe in the shadow of His wings. And for that reason, even in the troubled times of the darkest night, I can sing.
