When I was a girl, I liked to read at night. And I liked to snack while I was reading. I developed the habit of tossing the “leftovers” of my snack behind my headboard when I was done. When we prepared to move to another house, my bed was taken apart, and the proof of my snacking—candy wrappers, crumpled napkins, chicken bones (!)—was displayed for all to see.

We might think we’re hiding our deeds. But God knows it all, and one day our deeds will be exposed, both the good and the not-so-good. Do you remember the question God asked Adam and Eve when they were hiding from Him in the Garden of Eden? In Genesis 3:9, He called out, “Where are you?” He didn’t ask because He didn’t know. Of course He knew! But He was giving Adam and Eve a chance to confess their whereabouts to Him. God is omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient—He is everywhere, completely powerful and all-knowing. We can’t hide from Him, and we can’t fool Him. How futile for us to try! Solomon concluded, wisely, that apart from God we are empty and without purpose. But by seeking and following Him, we become who He designed us to be. And in that, we find our meaning in life.
