Delighting in God’s Word

Years (um, decades lol) ago, when I worked as a secretary/receptionist at a college, I had a stack of posters I rotated on the bulletin board. One of them showed a pair of elephants with their trunks entangled, along with this piece of advice: “If all else fails, read the directions.” It always got a laugh. But actually, that’s not the greatest advice. Reading the directions should be the first step, not the last. Especially when it comes to reading the directions for believers found in God’s Word.

Are you familiar with the verse, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart”? When I was a kid, I thought that meant God would shower me with all the presents my heart could desire if I ran around saying, “I delight in You! I delight in You!” But delighting in Him and His Word is more than lip service, and it involves a deeper motivation than receiving what you want. When His instruction is our delight, we seek to serve Him first, others second, and ourselves last. We grow closer to Him, and our faith becomes more solid. We’re more likely to follow His will, and when we’re in the center of His will we find a peace and contentment that does not exist outside of relationship with Him.

When we develop a true love for God’s Word, we find a delight beyond anything the world can offer. In which scripture will you delight yourself today?
