Obedience

A hundred years ago (or so it sometimes seems) I taught 5th grade. There was a television mounted near the ceiling at the front of my classroom. When I stood at the blackboard (yes, the blackboard—this is 100 years ago, remember?), I could see a reflection of the entire class in the TV screen. Consequently, even with my back to the kids, I knew what was going on in the room. It only took about three times of me calling someone out without turning around for the kids to be convinced I really did have eyes in the back of my head. Orneriness ceased because they couldn’t get by with it. Such is the case with God. We might think we’re sneaking around, and we might even fool people, but we can never fool Him. He sees all, knows all, and can even read our secret motivations. Isn’t it so much better to simply obey? No worries about being caught, no worries about facing unpleasant consequences, and the assurance of knowing we’ve pleased our Father. Obedience: the way of peace.
