I feel as if I’m giving vocabulary lessons this week, but I can’t help myself. There is such wonderful meaning in these words! To be covered is to be given a hedge of protection where the enemy cannot reach. Have you ever seen a hen spread its wings and gather its chicks beneath them? No hawk will spy them and steal them away when they’re safely covered by the hen’s wings. Nothing can steal us from God’s love or from our salvation when we are His. Interestingly, the psalmist used military terms to describe what God’s truth is for believers: a shield and buckler. These were pieces of armor meant to deflect the enemies’ arrows or spears. God’s truth, meaning His instruction to us and also our recognition of His faithfulness, shields us from the enemy’s taunting and attacks. We can trust God to remain firm and act on our behalf. We can trust we are secure beneath His shielding wings.
