Sometimes things happen and we can’t make sense of them. They seem to be so wrong, so out of His will, so ridiculous or hurtful or unnecessary that the very circumstance sends us reeling. Paul probably felt that way when he was thrown into prison for preaching the Gospel of Christ. He probably asked God, “How can I preach from here?” But with him locked away, others realized they were going to have to pick up the torch. Despite—or maybe because of!—this fiery preacher’s imprisonment, the Gospel message spread, shared by men emboldened by the wrongness of what had happened to Paul and by Paul’s willingness to go to prison for the sake of Christ. God knows what He’s doing. Let me say that again: God knows what He’s doing. The confusing/hard/hurtful/insensible things to my way of thinking can be used by Him to work His perfect will. I must trust. I must trust and obey. I must trust and obey and be about His business.

A marvelous cycle

We often speak of evangelism and discipleship as separate functions but, honestly, the…
