Jesus suggested feeding the thousands of people gathered on the mountainside. The disciples didn’t have money to purchase so much bread. Then Andrew, one of the disciples, brought a little boy to Jesus. This child had come prepared with a simple lunch of five barley loaves and two fish. Enough for one little boy, but Andrew’s question seems apt: “What are they for so many?” This is where I get choked up. Jesus didn’t look into that basket and see limits. He didn’t see inadequacy. He didn’t get angry at the boy or the disciple for bringing Him something so paltry. No, when Jesus saw that basket, He saw possibility. He saw the opportunity to teach these people—the boy, His disciples, and all who had gathered—how even the smallest portion becomes much in His hands. Now, all of this was dependent upon this little boy being willing to hand over his basket of food. And if you know the story, you know he did. Tomorrow we’ll see the results of his willingness to share.
