How interesting that Paul referred to government as God’s servant. Whether our leaders are Christians or not, they are only governing with whatever authority God has given them. The laws that are established are meant to be for the wellbeing and protection of the citizenry. People who breaks laws (and get caught) go before a judge and receive a penalty for their disobedience. Being fearful of punishment is one deterrent to law-breaking, but for the Christian, there’s a greater reason to obey the laws: our conscience. Our conscience guides our integrity. Whatever we do, if we claim to be Christ-followers, we should respond to governmental authorities with integrity.
