(Stepping away from Psalm 91 today to consider the blessedness of freedom.) My maternal great-grandparents and paternal great-great-grandparents came to America from Russia in the early 1870s in search of the freedoms promised by this country. Having lived under oppression, they appreciated the opportunity to openly worship God and pursue their lives without fear of governmental persecution.

Freedom is a beautiful word, one we should never take lightly. When I taught Revolutionary War history, I told my fifth graders that freedom grants certain rights, but we won’t have freedom unless we are responsible in how we use it. I pray we never take our freedom as Americans for granted, but mostly I pray that every person finds his true freedom in a relationship with Christ. He alone rescues us from sin’s penalty and lets us walk in newness of life. In Him we are free of death’s sting and have the promise of eternity with Him. America’s freedoms, while amazing and worth celebrating, are temporal; freedom in Christ is eternal. John 8:36 — “…if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Amen.
