These words were spoken by John the Baptist, referring to Jesus. John wanted those around him to realize who Jesus was and why He’d come. The people would have understood a reference to a lamb; they sought forgiveness by shedding the blood of an unblemished lamb. Jesus, the Lamb of God, introduced grace, and that made the sacrifice of lambs unnecessary. He bore our sin on the cross, and the shedding of His blood made it possible for us to stand unblemished before the Father. Jesus came to take away the sin of the world, but that doesn’t mean the world is sinless. Only those who believe in Him, who ask Him to forgive their sins, are saved. He came for all, but not all have received Him. How much His heart must break when those He came to save refuse His gift of salvation. The offer of salvation doesn’t expire. It is available to every person, and how heaven must celebrate when a lost soul finds forgiveness. To be free of sin is to be free indeed! Thank You, Jesus, for Your sacrifice.
