We live in the information age. We are inundated with information—some of it accurate and helpful; some of it actually harmful misinformation. I used to tell my fifth graders, what is popular (socially accepted/lauded) is not always right, and what is right (moral) is not always popular. It’s been a long time since I was in the classroom, but the statement still holds true. We must be discerning in what we accept as fact lest we apply something spiritually harmful to our lives. Since human standards for “right” don’t remain the same from generation to generation, we need a standard that always holds true. We find that standard in God’s Word. He created us, thus He knows what will let us live productive, fulfilled, morally upright lives. James 1:5 tells us that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God, who will grant it to us. We can’t rely on man to guide us when it comes to truth. When in doubt, check it out against Scripture; we’ll find our good judgment and discernment there.
