Treasure in heaven

Humility kind of gets a bum rap. Some people think being humble means being weak; others think it means being a doormat. Neither is true. Humility is a simple recognition that God is sovereign over man, and therefore man should heed God’s instruction. An arrogant person thinks he is always right. The one who constantly “toots his own horn” might receive honor, applause, and recognition here on earth, but what of heaven? Our time here is fleeting. What we accumulate on earth is ours only for the duration of our physical lives. Our spiritual lives, however, live forever. Isn’t it better, then, to accumulate treasure in heaven? To live in a way that points others to the truth of God’s love and grace? A humble person sees others as equal in value to himself and treats them the way he wishes to be treated. The one who strives to emulate the Son will hear from the Father, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” That’s all the exaltation we should need.
