When Jesus was walking in the temple courts, Jews surrounded Him. They made a demand: “If You’re the Messiah, tell us.” I doubt Jesus rolled His eyes—He was too in tune with His Father to give in to such a human gesture—but He might’ve been tempted to do so. Why couldn’t these people get it? He’d only just healed a man of blindness. He’d performed countless other signs and miracles. They’d seen it, or at the very least they’d heard witness to it, and they still did not see who He was. So Jesus reminds them…He had already told them (and shown them). What more could He do? The truth is, He’d done His part. He had set about to do His Father’s business, and the evidence was in front of those peoples’ noses. Now it was up to them to believe or not.
There is no middle ground when it comes to faith. Either we believe Jesus is who He says He is and confess Him to be the Lord; or we reject Him. He’s done all He can do to point us to the truth, but He won’t force Himself on anyone. That’s a choice we each make.
