Have you ever heard the phrase “once saved, always saved”? There are mixed feelings about it, probably the result of some who use Christianity as fire insurance rather than make a real heart commitment. But I see the statement itself as true. We need only ask Christ to be our Savior one time. Salvation is a one-time happening. Those who are truly saved are sanctified. Sanctification is growing in faith; it’s living, with the help of the Holy Spirit, in a manner that shows we’ve been saved. When we acknowledge our lost state, ask Jesus to redeem us, and accept Him as our personal Savior and Lord, we have salvation that the world cannot take us from us. Not even death can take it from us. That’s the “always saved.” Our salvation removes us from being a slave to sin and names us as a child of God. God doesn’t reject His children, so we can say a son remains forever, even into eternity. All this applies to true salvation—a repentant heart that turns from sinful living to a sanctified life striving to bring glory to the One who saved him. A better way to say that old phrase might be “once truly saved, always saved.” I’m so glad to know I am a child of God forever and forever!
