A young man once told me he didn’t want to submit to God because he didn’t want anybody telling him what to do. The sentiment isn’t uncommon—a lot of people hold that view—but it actually doesn’t make a great deal of sense. You’re always going to serve a master: God or sin. One Master wants what’s best for you while the other master leads you to destruction. So which is better? The thing is, when we give in to sin, we lose control of ourselves. We can get so tangled up in harmful habits that eventually they hold us captive. There are people who are so addicted to something, their entire life becomes about feeding that addiction. Is that freedom? Not hardly! Even those who live relatively “good” lives by society’s standards are slaves to sin if they’re living to serve self. Those who say, “I’m my own boss” are really saying they’re a slave to sin. Freedom is found in a relationship with Jesus.
