Spiritually, darkness and light symbolize the only two realms in which we live. Whichever realm we occupy empowers our thinking and behavior. Darkness is synonymous with evil (separated from God either out of ignorance or rebellion). People who are separated from God aren’t IN darkness; they ARE darkness. Once we receive Jesus as Savior and Lord, the darkness is shattered. We become children of light—indwelled with God’s Spirit. As such, we’re to live in a way that glorifies the Father. Our behavior should reflect goodness, integrity, justice, and truth. We do this by testing (carefully examining) situations and responding (both in attitudes and actions) based on what God expects from His children. As Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).
