Teaching means to give instruction, instill doctrine, or explain or expound on something. To make disciples but fail to give practical instruction on what it means to be a disciple doesn’t make a great deal of sense. We often speak of evangelism and discipleship as separate functions but, honestly, the two go hand in hand. Disciples teach other disciples, whether they are new or seasoned believers, the things of Christ so they can become more effective followers of Christ. You see, teaching isn’t meant to merely inform—it’s to transform. Teaching and learning are to lead to greater obedience to the One we follow. We are charged to obey all that Jesus taught—ethically, morally, and doctrinally. What Jesus taught when He walked the earth is still the truth today. It’s a marvelous cycle into which we enter when we, as obedient disciples, make disciples of others who become obedient disciples, so they, too, may make disciples. Let’s keep that cycle going until Jesus come again.
