Boy, that serpent was brazen! It directly contradicted God’s Word. We might think the serpent was right, because we know that Eve and Adam didn’t immediately experience physical death after tasting the fruit. But spiritually? Oh my, what a change it brought. It led to the spiritual death. A lot of people believe that we’re each equipped with our own moral compass—our personal system of what’s right and wrong. But if everyone sets their own standard for living, then there really is no standard at all. God’s Word is the only Standard that matters. When the serpent told Eve she wouldn’t die, it was offering Eve a choice: believe God, or believe the serpent. There was no middle ground. Each of us have that same choice: believe God, or don’t believe God. The choice we make leads to spiritual life or spiritual death. There is no in-between.
