We identified the meaning of “testify” earlier this week, so now let’s look at “convict.” To convict is to expose something—bring it to the light. In this case, it means to expose a person’s wrongdoings (sins) so they can be dealt with. We can’t fix something until we know it’s broken! The Holy Spirit lets us know we are broken people in need of redemption. The Holy Spirit convicts us about righteousness (morality, integrity, and goodness), helping us see where we’re falling short of the standards God has set (see Romans 3:23). When we understand how far we’ve fallen, we then understand how badly we need a Savior. That’s why Jesus came—to save us from unrighteousness. The Holy Spirit also convicts about the coming judgment. The evil one might think he’s winning in this world, but he’s wrong. Jesus already defeated the forces of evil with His atoning death. One day the evil one and all who’ve rejected Jesus will face God’s judgment for their sins. We can ignore His voice, but that doesn’t change the truth of our need for redemption. This world—every person everywhere—needs the Lord. So if we know Him, let’s testify about Him! Let your theme song be, “I love to tell the Story…of Jesus and His love.”
