Oh, that Peter. He had such good intentions. And he made a bold promise. It’s easy for us to sit in judgment on him, but if we’re completely honest with ourselves, we’ve made promises to Jesus with the grandest of intentions and they fell flat, too. “I’ll read my Bible every day”; “I’ll pray for fill-in-the-blank”; “I’ll be really patient and kind with so-and-so”; “I’ll give more than my tithe to the needy”… We mean well. We don’t intend to tell an untruth. But in the end, our promise is only words with no follow-through. Kind of depressing when we let ourselves dwell on our failures, isn’t it? Well, take heart. We’ll look again at failed promises tomorrow, and I *promise* I’ll end on a brighter note.
