We live in a society that’s pretty much “me” centered. But selfishness has no place in a Christian’s life. The way we treat others, especially those who aren’t in a position to do anything for us in return, says a lot about our character. My mom used to call good deeds “putting jewels in your crown.” Of course, it goes without saying that we need to do these good deeds to please our Father rather than gain pats on the back from anyone who might look on. When we share our time and resources with others, we’re actually giving to Jesus (remember when He said “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me”?). When we’re asked why we give, we can point to Him. Thus, when we share our time and resources with others, we set an example of unselfishness that can impact the world around us.
