Being indwelled with God’s Spirit gives us strength to endure, discernment to choose wisely, peace when life’s storms rage around us. But until Jesus died on the cross, rose again, and ascended to the Father, the Spirit couldn’t come. He had to wait until Jesus sent Him. Knowing they would tell Jesus goodbye had to be devastating for the disciples. They loved Him. They wanted Him with them forever. (Maybe we can relate to that feeling if we’ve told a loved one goodbye.) But His departure was for their benefit in that they could go in twelve different directions and each would still have the Counselor with them. It was for the world’s benefit that the Spirit came—so the Gospel message of Jesus could be carried to every corner of the earth.
