This week we’ll finish our lengthy journey through Matthew’s Gospel. This verse describing only a tiny piece of his crucifixion shatters me. Wasn’t it enough that He was unfairly arrested, viciously beaten, and ruthlessly nailed to a cross to die a slow, agonizing death? Apparently not for the ones who screamed for His crucifixion. He suffered humiliation on top of physical anguish…and He did it for me. For you. For all of mankind. Even for those who would never accept His gift of salvation. Oh, how He loves us.
