I remember a sermon from when I was a fourth grader. The minister shared from Psalm 37, and verse 4 (“Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart”) captured my attention. I had lots of desires, most especially a Spirograph set. I didn’t have enough money to buy it, but now I thought I knew how to get it, and without spending a penny from my piggyback. Over the next several days, I repeated to myself, almost like a mantra, “I delight in You! I delight in You! So send me my Spirograph!” I just knew that Spirograph set was going to show up at my house, compliments of God. (It didn’t. And it shouldn’t have.) My motivation was all wrong. I wasn’t delighting myself in Him for HIS sake; it was all about what I wanted to GET FROM Him. Very childish…and selfish. I wonder how often that’s what we do? We ask God for things out of selfishness rather than from a real desire to please Him. Glorifying Him with our words, our actions, our attitudes, and our belongings is the best motivation any of us can have. It’s not easy. Especially in a world that generally uses pleasing self as a strong motivation. But you know, if we truly do delight ourselves in Him, He gives us the desire to seek His will above our own. And that’s where we find joy.
