I remember coming home from school upset about the way a fellow student had spoken to me. I also remember Mom telling me that what comes out of a person says a lot about how they are on the inside; someone who is so unkind must be very unhappy. As much as the girl hurt me, I felt a little sorry for her at that point, deciding she must be miserable to have such ugliness pour out of her. Eventually what it is in the heart will show itself. It’s important for me to keep my heart tender and pure by “feeding” it with things that benefit me spiritually and help me grow in grace. When ugly starts coming out, it’s time to take inventory and consider what’s happening under the skin. I don’t want what proceeds from my heart to defile me.
