Refuge and fortress

Here are some more wonderful descriptors for God: MY refuge, MY fortress, MY GOD (emphases mine). Refuge and fortress have similar yet distinct meanings. A refuge is a place of shelter or sanctuary, while a fortress refers to a place of security. Again, we’re not talking about a physical location here, but the LORD HIMSELF, who is our shelter of strength. The name God in this verse is translated elohim, which points to the one true God. Placing our trust in Him means we are confident and bold in viewing Him as our security in a very unstable world. And then there is that qualifier: MY. How personal is it that the psalmist could say God was his? The “my” speaks of relationship—a close, confident, secure relationship that nothing of the world can destroy. When you are afraid, the best place to run is to your refuge and fortress…to YOUR God.
