Love and belief

If we break this scripture into two actions that are part of one command, we discover we are to believe and love. These are inseparable; we can’t do one without the other. If we believe in the name, which represents the character, of Jesus, then a natural offshoot is for us to love one another. We can’t possibly love the way God expects unless we believe, because our selfish sin nature prevents us from truly loving others. Christian life depends upon right belief and right behavior combined. Our belief isn’t real unless action grows out of it. Our actions are meaningless unless they grow out of right belief. To put it in a nutshell, love is grounded in belief, and belief leads us to love.
