Fresh hope

I have a collection of Bibles. I like reading from different translations to get a full grasp of the Holy Scripture. I wouldn’t like a steady diet of The Message, but every now and then it’s a refreshing change. Particularly in the books that hold a story-like quality. Such is the case with Acts. In the previous chapter, we learn that a mob scene broke out, instigated by a man who made idols and didn’t want the people in town to stop purchasing his goods. It was quite a hullabaloo! I’m sure it intimidated those who were interested in learning more about Jesus—I mean, riots are scary!—but eventually things calmed. And that’s where chapter 20 begins. Notice Paul’s first act of business when things were “back to normal”: encouragement. He encouraged believers to not let that wild ruckus deter them from holding to their faith. The encouragement lifted their spirits and gave them hope. Encouragement is such an incredible tool! Not to manipulate, but to inspire and remind people to look up. The evil one wants nothing more than to discourage and silence Christians. Silence stops the spread of the Gospel. Just as in Paul’s time, there are those who want Christians to hush. They can be noisy and accusatory and intimidating, but regardless, we should keep up the good work of sharing the HOPE that is found in Jesus. People need fresh hope.
