If we wanted to define the word “works” for context here, we would say “behavior with ethical and religious consequences.” I think we can all agree that evil deeds eventually lead to condemnation. On the other hand, good deeds lead to commendation. But good deeds in and of themselves don’t carry the same weight as works performed for the glory of God the Father. James wanted his readers to understand that faith—true faith in Christ—changes us. If we’ve accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, we’re indwelled with the Holy Spirit, who guides and directs us. He will lead us into behaviors that show our love for God and others. If our behaviors never change—if we remain self-focused—then are we truly any different than we were before we met Jesus? You see, salvation regenerates us. It transforms us morally. And it carries all the way into eternity!
