Selfishness comes so easily. If you don’t believe me, watch grade school kids when a plate of cookies shows up. Watch the race to be first in line, watch the hands reach for the biggest cookie… Yes, we don’t have to work at being selfish; it comes naturally. But Jesus taught a different mindset: humility. Not weakness—being humble is not being weak. Nor is it self-denigration. Humility is seeing others’ value as God’s precious creation. Humility is treating others like they matter. Humility is having a servant’s heart, just as Jesus did (more on that Thursday). For me to ponder: Is my hand reaching out more often to take or to give?
